A MISSING 14-year-old girl was found in a closet more than 400 miles from home a month after she disappeared.
The teenager was rescued after a scary sighting at a grocery store prompted police to search a home in Wichita, Kansas.
Police arrested 35-year-old David E. Roark on multiple charges after he allegedly abducted the Arkansas child.
Roark also had outstanding warrants from Kentucky, police said.
His arrest follows an investigation by the Exploited and Missing Child Unit and the White County Sheriff’s Office in Arkansas.
The Wichita Police Department was contacted by a White County sergeant after midnight Wednesday.
The officer was seeking help locating a 14-year-old girl who left home in early November and never returned, Officer Chad Ditch said.
A lead in the case came when the girl was spotted with a man in a supermarket before driving away with him in a car.
White County investigators learned the suspect may have been in the Wichita area.
After an investigation, police found out that Roark probably lived in a nearby house.
He was arrested when he was seen leaving the house.
Officers then found the missing teenager in a closet.
Both the girl and Roark were interviewed by the Exploited and Missing Child Unit.
Based on these interviews, “it was determined that additional crimes were being committed in Wichita,” according to police.
A search warrant was executed and Roark was charged with kidnapping, child molestation and inciting a child.
“The child has since been reunited with his family,” police said in a statement.
“Thanks to the excellent police work of the White County Sheriff’s Office and our officers and detectives at EMCU/ICAC, we were able to locate, retrieve, and return this child to her family.”
Roark will appear in court on Monday.
No further details about the suspect and victim’s relationship have been released, other than Roark met the teenager online.
Roark is in jail on a $1.5 million bond issue.
