GREEN TREE, Pa. (KDKA) – Monday is not a good day to break a shovel or run out of rock salt. Many stores were packed with customers over the weekend, all winter essentials were sold out or supplies were very limited.
“I want a shovel. But I guess they don’t have any,” said Trevor Morrow from the South Hills.
Like several other customers, when Morrow arrived at Ace Hardware on Greentree, he was greeted by sold-out signs informing shoppers that there were no snow blowers, snow shovels, electric shovels. , snowmobile, rock salt or propane.
Morrow said: “It was really annoying because I was shoveling and I was holding a plastic shovel and it broke.
Gina Dedig, assistant manager at Ace Fix-It Hardware in Green Tree, said sales plummeted on Sunday with a storm of shoppers bracing for snow, buying up an entire supply of salt just in less than 8 hours.
“Yesterday was the insane asylum. We were selling salt for about a thousand dollars an hour,” Dedig said, adding, “If the bag breaks, I discount it and people still take it. ”
Supply chain issues also have an impact this weekend. Instead of 50 or 60, the Greens location can only place about a dozen items like shovels at a time, but a truck is on its way to replenish these empty racks and hooks.
Across town Miller Ace Hardware in Mt. Oliver, owner Steve Miller still has plenty of salt and shovels, despite a slump in sales on Sunday.
“I have 5 pallets of salt, 2 pallets of 50 calcium, and 100 pallets of talc,” says Miller.
And so much more as people prepare for re-freezing.
“This morning, at seven o’clock I called from my bed, my provider, and ordered extra calcium and shovels.
His secret sauce to keep the store shelves? Pre order. Everything he’s selling this weekend comes from a reserve he’s been sitting on since spring.
