The non-profit organization received funding from the city to find suitable candidates for the aid program.

The program initially envisaged giving 115 participants $500 a month for a year when it was announced in 2021.

An anonymous $100,000 grant brought the potential recipients to 129, with the 109 now selected receiving slightly more money.

“We faced many challenges [including] Inability to reach individuals, re-incarceration and additional ineligible participants,” program director Syretta Hill told The News & Observer.

The new guaranteed income program could issue monthly payments worth up to $900

“As the number of participants dropped, we were able to increase the monthly payout to $600 per month.”

The organization hopes the money could be used to pay for rent, groceries and rising gas prices.

Over 500 applicants have already registered during the pre-selection process, resulting in 288 eligible participants.

The onboarding process consists of a three-step process.

According to Hill, phase one was the first call to the 129 randomly selected individuals provided to the organization by the Center for Guaranteed Income.

Phase two was benefit counseling and phase three was getting claimants to start setting up the Steady app, the payout platform, and get information about the participant’s beneficiary.

CALIFORNIA’S UBI PROGRAMS

Various cities and federal states have set up their own UBI programs.

Cities in California, like Oakland, pay 600 families $500 for 18 months.

A total of 3,200 Los Angeles families will receive $1,000 in monthly payments for a year.

Applications possible from March 31st.

Also, 125 single mothers in El Monte (a city in Los Angeles County) will be eligible to apply for $500 monthly payments in May.
