Grocery store workers reveal why they aren’t stopping shoplifters after Walmart said increasing theft could drive up prices

Grocery store workers have revealed why they aren’t stopping shoplifters after Walmart recently announced a surge in thefts could lead to higher prices.

Theft has not only been a problem for Walmart, but also for retailers in the United States as shoplifting hit record highs during the pandemic, according to the National Retail Federation.

In 2021, retailers suffered total inventory losses of $94 billion, according to the NRF.

Those losses are primarily attributed to shoplifting, reports The Wall Street Journal.

A representative of the food workers’ union in Washington told WKYT that most employees they represent are advised not to stop shoplifters.

Because there is a risk that the employee, the shoplifter and other buyers will be injured during the altercation, which could also lead to lawsuits.

According to a survey by NRF, “organized retail crime” committed by groups of people has increased by 26.5 percent in 2021.

And in December 2022, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon told CNBC that “theft is a problem” at its stores.

“That’s higher than in the past,” he said.

If this issue isn’t addressed, “prices will be higher and/or stores will close,” McMillon warned.

Walmart has gone to great lengths to combat shoplifters.

One way the supermarket has tried to stop thieves is by hiding its products from hands that could easily steal the items.

Reddit users claimed on Walmart’s subreddit that the store has begun using spider-wrap security devices to deal with theft from their flesh wall.

“I’ve seen spider-packaged meat and it just seems so problematic to me,” reads one comment.

“They don’t stack well when wrapped. And will someone clean the spider wrap?”

Another Walmart customer claimed on Quora that he and his girlfriend had to go through four anti-theft procedures to purchase a $2 makeup item protected by Plexiglas.

The pair had to press a button on the wall, which would then alert a Walmart employee to come and open the case.

When the clerk came to help, she took the makeup and locked it in a portable plexiglass case with an alarm sensor and an ink tag attached.

The couple then had to go to a cashier, who had to call a manager to unlock the case so they could purchase the $2 makeup.
