An unfortunate mistake made six years ago has become a holiday tradition – and a sensation on social media. An old woman mistakenly invited a stranger to Thanksgiving dinner in 2016 and became friends, and now the couple have been on vacation together all year since. This year is no exception.

In 2016, Wanda Dench tried to text her grandson about the family’s Thanksgiving dinner plans – only she mistakenly added strangers with text messages. Jamal Hinton received a late-holiday text and joked with Dench about her offer.

“She’s not my grandma,” Hinton wrote back, along with a selfie to prove he wasn’t the grandchild Dench thought she was texting. “Can I still get a plate tho?”

“She’s not my grandma,” Hinton wrote back, along with a selfie to prove he wasn’t the grandchild Dench thought she was texting. “Can I still get a plate tho?”

Dench, a former caregiver, replied: “Of course you can. That’s what grandma does… feed everyone. Hinton posted about the funny combination and it went viral.

And on Thanksgiving Day, he actually drove from Tempe, Arizona to Mesa to go on vacation with the Dench family.

In 2017, the couple is unlikely to see each other on Thanksgiving again. And every year since then, Hinton and Dench have celebrated the holiday together.

Hinton herself has amassed a huge following on social media since that first viral post, now with a verified Instagram account with over 92,300 followers and over 108,000 followers on Twitter.
