Google fired me and my husband while I was on maternity leave with a four-month-old baby – but it was the “nudge we needed”.

A WORKER was fired from Google while on maternity leave, but she said the couple ultimately benefited.
It’s no secret that Google, along with other big tech companies, recently announced mass layoffs.

The job cuts were announced in a company-wide memo on Jan. 20, with Google announcing it would be reducing its workforce by 12,000 employees.
Allie and her husband Steve, who both worked at the tech giant, suffered the same fate as thousands of their peers.
Allie broke the news while she was on maternity leave with the couple’s 4-month-old child, she told Business Insider.
She explained that she only took the leave a few weeks prior and plans to continue for about eight months.

Steve had taken his maternity leave for two months at the end of 2022 and planned to take more starting in March this year.
The two parents reportedly learned the news of her release at the same time.
Despite being abruptly fired during a major life event, Allie said, “That was the boost we needed.”
The couple had been planning to expand their own business for some time.
She explained that they had founded White Cube Media back in 2014, but mainly worked on it when there was time.
Allie said that White Cube Media makes “animated explainer videos” for various companies and corporations.
Allie also noted that the jobs at Google gave both her and Steve the security and consistency they needed as they continued to develop White Cube Media.
The side jobs often took up nights, weekends and vacation time.
As a result of the layoffs, the couple can now go about their business more than before.
“We work very hard,” Allie explained.
“It doesn’t even feel like work to us.”
They also told the publication that they moved to California about three years after White Cube Media was founded, when Allie got her job at Google.
Steve then got his job two years later.
The couple told the publication that they worked in different roles at Google and didn’t see each other often.
They still met up for lunch from time to time and rode the company’s bike paths.
Steve was director of research and operations while Allie was director of marketing at the technology company.
The pair have remained positive about their experience at Google even in the face of the layoffs.
Allie said she had “six wonderful years” at Google and mentioned her approval of the company’s perks, such as generous maternity leave.
Steve said that Google has invested in its people.
Not to mention that Allie said after she released an announcement about the couple’s firing, there was an “overwhelming reaction” from fellow Google employees and other companies.
Some of these companies even offered jobs, according to Allie.
