Goldberg didn’t like the idea of DDP’s spear at first

Diamond Dallas Page (DDP) recently recalled how Bill Goldberg initially didn’t like one of his ideas for their famous match at WCW Halloween Havoc 1998.

Goldberg defeated DDP in the pay-per-view main event to retain the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. Late in the game, Goldberg collided with a pillar after DDP jumped over the top rope to avoid a spear.

Speaking on Steve Austin’s Broken skull sessions, DDP revealed that Goldberg immediately turned down the spearhead position when he pitched the idea.

“I said, ‘Listen, Goldie, I’m mentally prepared for this game and you’re going to miss your first spike,'” DDP recalls. I said, ‘No, man, believe me, you are.’ He said, ‘I don’t remember the spear, man. That is my position.’ I said, ‘That’s why you have to miss the spear.’ He didn’t agree with me until just before we did. “

Goldberg got the win in the 10th minute after he hit DDP with his Jackhammer finish. The match is considered by many to be one of the best fights in the careers of both wrestlers.

DDP understands why Goldberg doesn’t like his idea

DDP went on to explain that Goldberg was one of the most competitive wrestlers in the locker room during his time in WCW. He said “everything has to be real” to the former footballer, that’s why he takes his personality very seriously.

While some might find Goldberg difficult to work with, DDP would love to compete against the former WCW World Heavyweight champion.

“It’s not that he doesn’t want to play football,” DDP continued. “He is one of the most competitive human beings on the planet. So when he came in, I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ and I just threw myself over the rope. “

While DDP vs Goldberg received a lot of praise, the match was also memorable for the wrong reasons. The penultimate match of the night, Hulk Hogan vs. The Warrior, lasted longer than anticipated. As a result, pay-per-view broadcasting was cut during the main event for a third of US households.

WCW broadcast DDP vs. Goldberg on free TV in the next night’s episode of Nitro in an attempt to make up for the pay-per-view error.
