‘God have mercy on them’ – Chris Eubank senior claims he knows who is responsible for Conor Benn’s failed drug test

CHRIS EUBANK SR claims he knows who was behind the positive drug test that botched his son’s showdown with Conor Benn.

Benn, the son of boxing legend Nigel, failed a drug test that failed in a clash with 33-year-old Chris Eubank Jr.

The welterweight tested positive for a testosterone booster, resulting in the fight at London’s O2 being postponed.

Benn, who denies wrongdoing, could face a four-year ban if found guilty of a doping offence.

Eubank, 56, claims he knows who was responsible for testing positive for banned clomiphene, a drug normally used to treat female infertility.

He told a crowd in the West Midlands: “I think I know I have a good idea.

“If Nigel finds out who tricked him and who slandered his son, if he finds out who they are, I don’t want that man coming after me. But you don’t have to worry about me. You have Nigel Benn to worry about. God have mercy on them.

“If he finds out who did this to his son.”

Eubank added: “There is now an investigation taking place that will bring to light those who have committed what they have committed.”

The British Boxing Board of Control refused to sanction the sell-out multi-million pound catchweight fight after the failed test was exposed, despite Benn’s promoter Eddie Hearn trying to salvage the event.

Former world middleweight and super middleweight champion Benn, 58, insists his son is a clean fighter.

The pair spoke on the first night of a tour reminiscent of their famous ’90s rivalry.

Benn told the crowd at the Coventry Building Society Arena: “I guarantee you, if I thought my son had ever taken performance-enhancing drugs, I would hang him out to dry.”

He added: “I know my son. I would be the first person to throw it under the bus. I would say, ‘Son, I love you but you don’t do it around me’.

“And I know my son 100 percent. I saw my son cry in my arms. But do you know what it is?

“He will be rehabilitated and I just pray the apology is as loud as the conviction.

“Everyone found him guilty but I know my son, that’s all I can say.”

The doomed fight was intended to reignite the rivalry between the elder Benn and Eubank, who faced off twice for world titles in 1990 and 1993.

Benn Jr., 26, has vowed to clear his name, telling critics on social media, “I hope the apology is as loud as the disrespect.”
