On Wednesday, GMA host Michael Strahan revealed that Roberts graced the cover of People Magazine for their annual Pride Month issue.

The issue highlights the importance of staying true to yourself and why allies matter in the LGBTQIA+ community.

Roberts wrote an essay for the magazine explaining why she decided to go public with her love life.

In 2012, Robin Roberts was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, a bone marrow disorder, after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, NBC News reported.

Since those diagnoses, her partner Amber Laign has also been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Roberts revealed her relationship with Laign in a social media post and thanked everyone who had supported her through her health struggles.

“I was just thanking everyone. I did it via a simple social media post thanking my doctors and my parents,” Roberts told People magazine.

“But then didn’t I want to thank this woman who had accompanied me through this illness?”

Roberts added that she’s grateful to the public for not making a big deal out of her sexuality.

She admitted she was initially afraid to come out, but quickly realized her story could offer hope to someone else.

“Then I realized that if someone who looked like me came along, maybe I could give them a little more encouragement.

“Maybe they would know they’re not alone,” Roberts told People.

Roberts said she became a journalist because she loves stories, but it took her a while to realize that her own story mattered, too.

The realization led her to realize that her story could be a ray of hope for others.

“I have learned that we can all give hope. We can all be random, random activists, beacons of recognition and representation,” she told People.

“By being our authentic selves, others can be motivated. They can even flock to it.”
