GMA’s George Stephanopoulos gives a cryptic response to news a major screen project has been scrapped
GOOD Morning America host and news anchor George Stephanopoulos chimed in on the news that a biopic about pop star Madonna has been scrapped.
On Tuesday, Stephanopoulos responded to the news on Twitter by tweeting that it was “interesting” that the biopic was discontinued.
The film was intended to document Madonna’s four-decade career in music, fashion and art, and was to be directed by Madonna herself.
Ozark star Julia Garner was set to play the pop icon and has been in development with Universal Pictures since 2020 under the working title Little Sparrow.
Production on the film was hampered by Madonna planning a greatest hits tour and Universal Pictures pulling out of the project after announcing the tour, Variety reported.
The biopic was widely discussed online, especially after it was revealed that casting hopefuls had to participate in grueling 11-hour days that included singing and choreography.
Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody was eventually determined to write the film, but pulled away from the project after finding Madonna difficult to work with.
Diablo – who won an Oscar for the screenplay for Juno in 2007 – and Madonna disagreed on the final version of the film.
A source told The Sun: “Madonna and Diablo have been working on the script for weeks and are making good progress.”
“But Madonna is understandably very specific about how she wants it to be. She’s a perfectionist and because her life is at stake, she pays a lot of attention to how things come across.
“Diablo needed more freedom to make it work and eventually decided she couldn’t contribute more.”
Despite the hurdles, Variety reported that Madonna is still determined to make the film a reality.
“I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, musician, dancer — a human being trying to assert himself in this world,” the singer said in 2020.
“There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell them than me.
“It’s important to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”
Stephanopoulos comments shortly after the premiere of his new documentary Pretty Baby at the Sundance Film Festival.
He was filming Pretty Baby with his wife Ali, about her close friend Brooke Shields.
