She was taken to Girona’s Josep Trueta Hospital on Tuesday afternoon but died hours later.

A woman remained in the same hospital today for injuries sustained in the devastating hailstorm.

Most of the other 28 people who required medical treatment are said to have suffered head injuries or lacerations from the ice that required stitches, as well as broken bones.

Many cars were also damaged by the tennis ball-sized rocks.

Catalonia weather chiefs said the hailstones that have fallen in the area near the tourist town of Girona, near Spain’s northeastern border with France, were the largest in twenty years.

The nationality of the deceased infant and where exactly she was when she was struck by the hailstones that killed her is not yet known.

The deadliest known hailstorm in history was that which struck the Indian city of Moradabad in 1888.

Nearly 250 people were killed after being hit by orange-sized hail.

The record for the largest hailstone was broken in Vivian, South Dakota in 2010.

It weighed about 878 grams and was nearly eight inches in diameter.
