There was pressure from Antetokounmpo’s perspective when he signed a five-year, $228 million contract extension in 2020.
He told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “In 2020 I was ready to leave the game. I had this conversation – yes – with the front office.”
Before Giannis signed what was then the largest contract in NBA history, he won both MVP and Defensive Player honors in 2019.
“Everyone’s looking at me like I’m crazy,” Antetokounmpo said of people’s reactions to the prospect of potentially retiring after signing the lucrative deal.

“You just signed the biggest contract in NBA history and you want to retire from the game and all that money?
“Mannnn, you can take the money and put it in your…sorry for my language.”
Giannis’ mental health was poor as the Bucks lost to the Toronto Raptors in the Eastern Conference Finals after leading the series 2-0.
Then in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the Bucks into the NBA bubble.
Milwaukee was eliminated by the Miami Heat in the second round.
The City of Milwaukee would participate in social justice regarding issues in the city.
Antetokounmpo chose not to retire and the rest is history.
Milwaukee won its first NBA Finals championship in 50 years in 2021 when Giannis became Finals MVP.
Speaking of continuing to play basketball, Antetokounmpo said, “Somebody helped me again to appreciate all the things I have that come with being who I am. To be okay with myself.”
This season, the seven-time All-Star averaged 31.1 points, 11.8 rebounds and 5.7 assists, helping the Bucks to the best record in the Eastern Conference.
