Ghislaine Maxwell trial: Key accusers who met Maxwell as a teenager, now accuse her as an adult

NEW YORK – An aspiring musician looking for a big break in the show business. Another is a role model striving for a place in British society. A third is a struggling middle school dropout. The last one is an impressive high school student.

They were all caught up in Jeffrey Epstein’s orbit as a teenager and have now also testified as key accusers in the British social media site Ghislaine’s sexual abuse trial. Maxwell.

The women’s testimony in federal court in Manhattan, at times emotional, offers grisly details about allegations Maxwell prepared them to engage in sexual massages with Epstein.

The defense said Maxwell is being made to replace Epstein, who died by suicide while awaiting his own sexual abuse trial in 2019.

The first three women to testify were Jane, Kate and Carolyn – names or pseudonyms intended to protect their privacy. The last one was Annie Farmer, who stood in front of the witness by her real name.

Here’s what they said during two weeks of testifying to the government, which settled the case Friday. The defense will begin its own case next week:

JANE

Jane outlined an alleged pattern of deception by Maxwell that others would repeat. She said she was 14 years old when she met Maxwell and Epstein at a music camp where Epstein was a philanthropist.

Maxwell noticed her in a way that made her vulnerable when she was first instructed to follow Epstein into his pool house on his Palm Beach, Florida estate in 1994, she said. .

When he began sexually abusing her, “I froze to death from fear,” she said. “I’ve never seen a penis before.”

Prosecutors want proof that Maxwell was directly involved. Jane gave it to them by claiming Maxwell and Epstein had cuddled her together.

When a prosecutor asked her why, as the defense pointed out, she didn’t initially disclose everything about her experience with Epstein in her initial interviews with law enforcement, She said, holding back tears: “Because it’s so hard – so emotionally difficult on every level.”

KATE

Like others, Kate recalls Maxwell praising and encouraging her, before Epstein sexually abused her during interactions that began in the early 1990s when she was 17.

The British woman describes being attracted to Maxwell, the daughter of a media mogul, and wants to be her friend. She also testified about seeing Epstein naked for the first time after Maxwell stood next to him and asked her to give him a massage – and about feeling embarrassed when it was over.

But there was a twist to her testimony when the judge ruled in favor of defense arguments that she was not authorized to testify about the details of any sex with Epstein.

US District Judge Alison Nathan placed limits on her testimony because she was 17 years old when she first came into contact with Epstein at Maxwell’s London home – the minimum age of consent in the UK. The same applies to later visits to Epstein’s home in Florida when she was 18.

Kate still may have dealt a blow to the government with her account of her interaction with Maxwell after a sex massage with Epstein.

Maxwell “ask me if I am happy” and tells her: “You are such a good girl”.

CAROLYN

Carolyn’s key role was to provide testimony about what prosecutors called the “pyramid of abuse,” which Maxwell said encouraged.

When she was 14, she was one of a number of underprivileged teenagers who lived near Epstein’s Florida home in the early 2000s. Rumor had it that he was offering $100 for a massage.

When an elderly schoolmate suggested an introduction, Carolyn said she took the bait. She testified that she already knew her age, but that did not discourage Maxwell and Epstein, she said.

Epstein, she said, masturbated and fondled her “whenever” they were together. He also wants her to bring “any friends my age or younger,” she said.

She said she found a friend to play three with Epstein. When it ended, “I got paid $600 and my friend got paid $300.” Why? “Because I brought her.”

She learned that her contract was about to expire at the age of 18 when Epstein, instead of hiring her for massages, asked her to bring in younger girls.

“And that’s when I realized I was too old,” she said.

FARMERS ANNIE

Farmer, now 42, is a psychologist who has told her story publicly before trial through the civil case against Epstein and in media interviews. She reiterates how Epstein and Maxwell made her believe they could be mentors, only to betray her trust.

In the stands, she instructed the judges about her history with Epstein as a 16-year-old and in high school in 1996. She described how she was horrified when Epstein took her hand to a movie in New York; when Maxwell touched her breasts while massaging her at Epstein’s New Mexico ranch; and when Epstein suddenly crawled into bed with her and pressed himself against her.

Feeling helpless, she made an excuse to go to the bathroom and hide there, thinking she “wanted to stay in there long enough for this to stop,” she said.

The defense tried to blackmail Farmer by suggesting she exaggerate her allegations in a $1.5 million claim awarded to a compensation fund set up for Epstein’s victims by saying that Maxwell had “groped” her and that Epstein had rubbed his genitals with hers.

Farmers push back. Her goal so far, she said, has been to see Maxwell “take responsibility for the harm she has caused.”
