Ghislaine Maxwell sex trafficking trial begins 2 years after Epstein’s suicide – National

Two years later Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide behind bars, a jury was selected Monday in New York City to determine the central question in the protracted sex-trafficking case: Was his longtime companion, Ghislaine Maxwell, Puppet or accomplice of Epstein?

Twelve juries and six alternates will hear Maxwell’s case, starting with opening statements scheduled for later in the day. They were chosen from a pool of 40 to 60 potential jurors, who got there through initial interrogations.

Maxwell – who once dated the financier – allegedly acted as Epstein’s main manager, recruiting and grooming young girls for his abuse. The charges against her stem from allegations by four women that she and Epstein fell victim to them as teenagers between 1994 and 2004.

Prosecutors say there is evidence Maxwell knew that the victims, including a 14-year-old, were underage and that she arranged travel between Epstein’s homes, including his estate. him in Palm Beach, Florida, his luxury Manhattan townhouse and at other residences in Santa Fe, New Mexico and London.

Epstein committed suicide in a federal prison in Manhattan in August 2019, a month after being arrested for sex trafficking. Authorities charged Maxwell in July 2020, arresting her after tracking her to a $1 million property in New Hampshire where she had been hiding during the coronavirus pandemic.

Maxwell has pleaded not guilty and vehemently denies wrongdoing. The 59-year-old British socialite, jailed in Brooklyn since her arrest, has called the claims against her “absolute rubbish”. Maxwell’s attorneys and family say she is Epstein’s pawn, now paying “a price of blood” to satisfy the public’s desire to see someone held accountable for her crimes.

The wealthy, Oxford-educated Maxwell was the daughter of British newspaper magnate Robert Maxwell, who died in 1991 after falling off his yacht – the Lady Ghislaine – near the Canary Islands. Robert Maxwell, whose shares at the time included the New York Daily News, were facing charges that he illegally robbed the retirement funds of his businesses.

Ghislaine Maxwell holds US, British and French citizenship and was repeatedly denied bail during the trial.
