After seeing off German giants Borussia Dortmund with a score of 6-4 in the play-off round, Giovanni Van Bronckhorst’s army started the opening match.

Red Star had an offside effort within three minutes before the referee awarded Rangers a penalty as Ryan Kent was cut in the box.

Skipper Tavernier made no mistake from 12 yards before Red Star was frustrated after being ruled out for the second time when Aleksandar Katai was flagged for offside after circling Gers goalkeeper Allan McGregor.

Colombian striker Morelos beat Ibrox after scoring the 32nd Europa League goal of his career for Rangers in the 15th minute before McGregor became the hero on the penalty spot.
