German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the measures were necessary because of concerns that hospitals could become overwhelmed with people with Covid-19 infections, which are more likely to be severe in unvaccinated people. .

“We understand that the situation is very serious and we want to take additional measures beyond those already taken,” she told reporters.

“For this to happen, the fourth wave has to be broken and this has not yet been achieved.”

It comes after the discovery of a new Omicron variant, which was first reported by South Africa to the World Health Organization (WHO) on November 24, and has spread rapidly around the world.

It is feared that Omicron could cause more than half of Covid-19 cases in Europe in the “next few months”.
