Germany 1 England 1: Harry Kane scores 50th Three Lions goal to leapfrog Bobby Charlton as Skipper saves a point in Munich

When Harry Kane took a horizontal position in the German penalty area, ENGLAND looked like a team in desperate need of a good prone position.

But even if they were outplayed by a technically superior Germany for a long time, the Three Lions are always there with a snap when the Tottenham striker is nearby.

Kane ‘won’ the penalty equalizer in the 85th minute after a touch with Nico Schlotterbeck the way the English wailed over Jurgen Klinsmann’s victory many moons ago.

But as this is our future Sir Harry, let’s just call it professionalism and revel in goals from just 71 internationals in half a century.

Kane has now overtaken Bobby Charlton and is just three shy of Wayne Rooney’s record for England’s all-time goals.

It meant Gareth Southgate’s men avoided the outrage of back-to-back defeats for the first time in almost four years and kept them from falling into a potential spiral of negativity five months before the World Cup.

England appear to have fallen behind individually and collectively since beating Germany at last summer’s European Championships.

Few of Southgate’s players have had great seasons at club level and since losing to Wembley on penalties they have not often performed convincingly as a team.

They lacked the ambition to help turn the tide until the introduction of Jack Grealish in the 72nd minute.

But England can always count on Kane – winner of the Golden Boot at the last World Cup and a man who never seems to know when he’s beaten, always knows where the goal is and also has a ruse that Southgate is sure to master appreciate.

It was a soft punishment rather than a shocking one – perhaps not a decision you’d expect a VAR to overturn and forgive.

But he forgave it – and Kane sent Manuel Neuer the wrong way to nullify Jonas Hofmann’s opener.

It has sent Southgate’s side, cream-colored after lengthy national campaigns, off the hook and out of the house in this Nations League campaign.

It wouldn’t have felt right for England to have strutted bravely to Germany after that EURO victory that ended Joachim Loew’s long tenure as coach of the side.

So Saturday’s shock defeat in Hungary at least dampened the Southgate side’s overconfidence.

It came as a pleasant surprise that earlier in the day there was very limited trouble in the city and the Germans treated their pre-game visitors to a blast of Football’s Coming Home – an anthem they had adopted themselves after winning Euro 96 .

The atmosphere was so subdued, as if the Germans had given out free tickets to tens of thousands of librarians.

The German team effectively played in drag – wearing their women’s team kit as a show of support for their female counterparts ahead of this summer’s Euro in England.

Southgate sent his A-listers – including ten of the starting XI that beat Germany last summer – but returned to a flat back four, all of which struggled at times.

England got off to a bad start, Kieran Trippier conceding a corner with a shocking back pass and Kyle Walker hacking Josh Kimmich off the line.

An early Kane shot injured Neuer in the hands – but the Germans frequently carved a smooth path through English lines with shades of Bloemfontein in 2010.

Bayern Munich teenager Jamal Musiala – born in Germany but raised in England and a U21 international for the Three Lions – likes the one who ran away for Southgate.

The kid has excellent feet in a confined space, he looks like he could mumble an octopus in a phone box and England couldn’t handle him.

The hosts had the ball in the net twice in the first 25 minutes, but neither of them counted.

Firstly, when Kalvin Phillips went down injured and England kicked the ball wide, Germany didn’t stand up and Thomas Muller scored, but referee Carlos del Cerro Grande had none of his cunning.

Phillips limped away and was replaced by Jude Bellingham, but soon a long ball over the top embarrassed Harry Maguire, who tried to grapple with Kai Havertz, while Jonas Hoffman stepped through and passed Jordan Pickford, only to be frustrated by a narrow decision for offside to be.

England had their moments, however – Kane fired in from close range when Neuer flapped from a Trippier corner and Bukayo Saka had to parry a shot from the German keeper in an inexplicable eight minutes of first-half injury time.

Remarkably, the first half ended goalless and no defense seemed convincing.

England had barely touched the ball for the first five minutes of the second half when Germany scored.

It was a drawn-out, stylish pass that pulled England one way and then the other, ending in a cute Kimmich pass that fed Hofmann, who rammed it past Pickford.

Almost immediately, Mount had a powerful shot that was pushed away by Neuer before Pickford blocked a clever save off the post in front of Muller.

Grealish’s arrival gave England more attacking intent – and Neuer was soon making good saves to thwart a Maguire header and a far-post failure by Kane.

And when Kane fell after a shove and slip from Schlotterbeck, he made no mistake with the penalty that allowed him to lift his racquet for half a century.
