George Santos and Joe Biden are using the same strategy in hopes voters will forget the scandals by the next election, an expert warns

Disgraced Congressman George Santos and President Joe Biden are using the same strategy to overcome their scandals, according to a politics and public opinion expert.

They may be on opposite sides of the political aisle, but both politicians are following the Trump playbook, riding the wave of criticism in the hope the public will forget their scandals by vote time, University of New Haven professor Chris Haynes told The US Sun.

Being ousted as a fraud decades ago, as Santos did, may have ruined a young politician’s career, but in today’s world, politicians can weather the storm and survive, he said.

“Don’t pretend it never happened, but don’t bring it up anymore,” Haynes explained. “And people will keep going as long as it doesn’t keep happening.”

While he admitted to “beautifying” his resume, New York Republican Santos refused to step down, largely ignoring media questions after it was revealed he lied about many aspects of his background, including his mother’s death on September 11.

“George Santos, I think, just wants everything to come out now because he’s hoping that in a year and a half, not everyone is necessarily going to forget it, but they’re going to say ‘whatever’ and move on,” Haynes said.

This is how the Biden administration has dealt with the backlash over the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, as well as the recent scandal surrounding classified documents found in his home, Haynes added.

“President Biden has also taken on this playbook,” he told The US Sun. “People will move on and they’ll forgive you and it won’t bring you down as much.”

Haynes added that Democrats may have learned that lesson from the way they handled the MeToo movement. While Democrats like former Senor Al Franken have resigned following allegations of sexual misconduct, Republicans like Rep. Matt Gaetz, who is dropping the allegations against him, have stayed in office.

“I think it started with Democrats thinking about how they handled MeToo. Many of them have resigned while Republicans have not,” Haynes said.

That playbook could work for Santos and Biden as they have a while before standing for re-election, according to the pundit.

But things are different when the scandal comes to light during the campaign, as happened with failed Georgia Senate candidate Hershel Walker, who, despite his official pro-life stance, has been repeatedly accused of paying for abortions.

And not only does politics deal with scandals differently, but also the media and the public, which seems to be more lenient.

“The media is just moving on to the next one [scandal]. After cable and the internet, we’re much more geared towards news cycles,” Haynes said.

“But I think especially after Trump, we just saw the fact that Republicans were willing to just let it go. And Americans, especially Republicans, to a certain extent, simply forgave him.

Given that voters are traditionally the ones who hold politicians accountable, the current landscape could pose a threat to democracy, Haynes warned.

He explained: “At the end of the day, it is the people who hold politicians accountable .

“The only accountability might come from the Justice Department of the courts, if that’s the case.”
