And that seemed enough to give them the first-leg advantage in Belgium.

But they were held back by Hugo Cuypers in the second half.

Gent were the ones who put the pressure on a late second and hit the bar, but it was the Hammers who were most relieved when they heard the final whistle.

The second leg takes place at the London Stadium next week.
