The Hazlet, New Jersey community responds to fallen wires and poles.

“Off Hwy 35 near the intersections of Hazlet Ave. and Holmdel Rd, traffic lights are off.

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Central Ocean County in southern New Jersey earlier Friday. Wind speeds of up to 60 km/h were expected.

Local residents shared photos of giant ping-pong and avocado-sized hail that fell on Friday afternoon as nasty storms swept through the area. Twitter user Chip Murphy called the storm “intense.”

The tri-state area is expecting a major heat wave this weekend.

Temperatures in the region are expected to hit the 90s on Saturday and Sunday.

But the east coast isn’t the only part of the country hit by storms today.

A tornado in Gaylord, Michigan has killed one person and injured at least 23 others, and officials say the damage is “catastrophic”.

Munson Healthcare spokesman Brian Lawson said he had no additional information about the death but said things had stabilized somewhat after the first tornado made landfall.

Lt. Jim Gorno of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources told CNN, “It’s a busy downtown and it went right through it,” he said of the tornado.

“We’re not used to that up here,” he added. “We don’t have sirens like in other parts of the country.”

Michigan State Police tweeted a recommendation to residents in which they write: “Trees and power lines block roads. Several homes and businesses damaged.

“Avoid the Gaylord area. Rescue workers react.”

State police also tweeted that those injured in the tornado were being taken to local hospitals.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer released a statement via Twitter.
