But the Catalan giants were forced to remove him from their roster of first-team players due to their ongoing financial woes.

As a result, the teenager could now go on a free transfer in the summer.

Chelsea have reportedly spoken to Gavi’s representatives about a potential deal, with one report suggesting Todd Boehly is ready to make him one of the Premier League’s highest-earning players.

However, Xavi is desperate to keep the 2022 Kopa Trophy winner and has wondered if a move from Barcelona would be right for him.

When asked about Gavi’s departure, he said: “I don’t think Gavi would be happy at another club.

“He has everything here. He’s 18 years old. He’s a key player in our team.

“For me, he is an outstanding footballer.

“I don’t know what his decision will be but I think his future is here at the club.”
