Local broadcaster France Bleu said Ulliel, known for appearing in Chanel perfume ads as well as film and television roles, suffered a serious head injury in the crash.

The star, who shares a five-year-old son with model Gaëlle Piétri, was taken on a plane to hospital in Grenoble following the horrific collision.

Despite the efforts of paramedics, he could not be saved and was pronounced dead at 4pm.

His family confirmed his death in a statement on Wednesday.

According to reports, the French actor was not wearing his helmet when he crashed into another skier at a ramp crossing.

The second person involved was not seriously injured and an investigation is currently underway into the tragic accident, the Savoie prosecutor’s office said.

A witness to the tragedy told investigators its conditions were good and “not dangerous”. Other adults chose to ski without helmets.

In a statement, Albertville prosecutor Anne Gaches said: “Gaspard Ulliel collided with another skier on top of a blue track called Tetras.

“He just took a left fork, presumably to join his friends who are running on the Gellinotte track.”

Witnesses said the two skiers “both fell to the ground”.

“When help arrived, Gaspard Ulliel was motionless, unconscious in the snow. The other skier was unharmed,” she said.

The mountain police are said to have responded to numerous accidents in the area in recent days due to the hard ice and snow on the slopes.

Ulliel played young Hannibal Lecter in the 2007 film Hannibal Rising and fashion mogul Yves Saint Laurent in the 2014 biopic Saint Laurent.

TESTING ON SLOPES

The father of a child is also from the upcoming Marvel series Moon Knight and he is the face of Chanel’s men’s fragrance Bleu de Chanel.

The first trailer for Moon Knight was released only on Tuesday and will launch on the Disney Plus streaming service on March 30.

Ulliel won the Cesar Award – the French equivalent of the Oscar – for best actor in 2017 for Just the World’s End, in which he starred alongside Marion Cotillard and Lea Seydoux.

He took home the Cesar Award in 2004 for most promising actor after appearing in the World War I television series A Very Long Engagement alongside Audrey Tautou.

French Prime Minister Jean Castex led tributes to Ulliel after the star’s death.

He said: “Gaspard Ulliel grew up with cinema and cinema grew up with him. They fell madly in love.

“With a heavy heart, we will now get to see his finest interpretations and catch this sure look. We are losing a French actor.”

‘CHARGE AND ENERGY’

“French cinema is losing a huge talent, full of charm and energy,” said French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire.

And one of Ulliel’s directors described the actor as something of a mystery.

Rodolphe Marconi, director of one of his first films, The Last Day, said: “He was a strange boy, difficult to penetrate.

“He definitely has a fissure, the day it opens, it’s going to hurt.”

The tragic accident recalls the time when Formula One great Michael Schumacher was hit on the head in a horrific ski crash in 2013 at the French resort of Meribel – about a block from where Ulliel was skiing. 30 km.

Schumacher, 53, has not appeared in public for eight years, and little is known about his physical and mental condition.
