Gary Neville last laughed as Spain suffer a World Cup nightmare against Morocco

GARY NEVILLE had the last laugh as Spain were eliminated from the World Cup.

The 2010 champions couldn’t beat Morocco in 120 minutes of football.

They had an absolute shooting nightmare as they missed all three attempts to be sent home by the Atlas Lions.

And the performance ensured Neville was belatedly confirmed for his pre-tournament predictions.

The Manchester United legend boldly declared that Spain’s side “have no goals in them” ahead of Qatar 2022 opener against Costa Rica.

He blushed a little, however, as Luis Enrique’s men smashed seven goals past their helpless opponents.

Afterwards, Neville doubled down on his claim, saying: “We can’t measure Spain by that at all.

“I think we’ll be right!”

And the statistics in the goalless draw with Morocco before the penalty shoot-out gave Neville support.

Spain, who scored once against Germany and once against Japan, managed 13 shots against Morocco and tacked on a staggering 1,019 passes – Rodri’s 206 alone.

But even with eight corners and 77 percent possession, Spain only managed a meager shot on target and failed to threaten Yassine Bounou’s goal.

Late substitute Pablo Sarabia had a great chance to win the round of 16 clash in extra-time injury.

But his lateral foot volley shaved the far post – his next touch also hit the post as he missed his penalty.

Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquets both saw their efforts saved by Bounou before Madrid-born Achraf Hakimi kept his cool, downed a delicious panenka in the middle and executed Morocco.

And fans on Twitter were quick to praise Neville for his expert analysis.

One said: “Remember when Gary Neville said Spain lacked firepower and everyone laughed at him.”

Another wrote: “So it turns out Gary Neville was spot on about Spain and missing goals…even from 12 yards!”

And a third added: “It’s really scary how accurate Gary Neville said Spain have no goals.”
