Southgate was asked about Sterling’s absence after his side defeated Senegal 3-0 and advanced to the quarter-finals next Saturday.

“We’ll have to wait and see,” he said.

“Right now his priority is to be with his family, we will support that and give him as much time as he needs.

“He’s going home… he needs time with his family.

“Sometimes football is not the most important thing and family should come first.”

England captain Harry Kane also sent best wishes to his pal Sterling after the game and said he hoped he could return “as soon as possible”.

He said: “Our thoughts are with him and his family.

“It’s a private matter, but it’s never easy to see one of your teammates and friends going through something like this.

“For us as a team we are all sending our best to him and we hope to see him as soon as possible.”

Sterling’s Chelsea team-mate Kalidou Koulibaly has also spoken out in support of the star after the harrowing raid.

“I really didn’t know. I’m really surprised,” he said.

“I hope his family is doing well. Now I’ll call him and see what happened to him. But I hope he is doing well and his family is doing well.”

“AWAY FROM WORRY”

It emerged tonight that the England star was forced to return to his Surrey mansion after armed burglars broke into his home while his fiancé and young children were inside.

The horror burglary happened on Saturday night – the night before England’s World Cup defeat by Senegal.

His terrified fiancee Paige Milian, 27, sounded the alarm after the gang stole £300,000 worth of watches.

It’s not yet known if real estate developer Paige confronted the gunmen, or if they backed out after realizing the family was home.

The gang may have thought she and the couple’s sons, aged five and three, were still in Qatar.

Ahead of England’s first game against Iran, she posted pictures of the two boys on a cruise ship in Doha, and she’s been tagged with cocktails in social media pictures.

A family source said: “This was terrifying for her and obviously traumatic for the whole family.

“Raheem must have been beside himself with worry when he heard it. Being gone when your partner and kids are home when a gunman gang breaks in is indescribable.

“It looks like around £300,000 worth of watches have been stolen. The police were there for several hours.”

STARS IN DANGER

The head of a national intelligence unit focused on serious organized crime has warned of a rise in star heists as gangs scour social media feeds.

Supt Carl Williams of Operation Opal said: “In today’s world where many wealthy individuals are active on social media, their significant public profile can help make them targets.

“Their valuable possessions are often on display, as is information about their plans.”

Prior to the game, Sterling’s absence from the duel was explained as a “family matter”.

A spokesman for the FA said: “Raheem Sterling is not available for selection for the #ThreeLions tonight as he is dealing with a family matter.”

The shock announcement came just hours before the Three Lions kicked off against the Africa Cup of Nations champions.

With England now set to take on reigning world champions France next Saturday, it remains unclear if Sterling will be part of the squad.
