Furious Erik ten Hag slams Man Utd’s ‘unacceptable’ performance after being caught ‘sleeping’ in friendly batting in Cadiz

ERIK TEN HAG slammed his Manchester United flops after being thrashed by Cadiz.

United were in Spain to take part in one of two friendlies they arranged during a warm-weather training camp ahead of the Premier League’s return.

However, things did not go to plan for the Red Devils as they suffered a 4-2 defeat.

And the demanding Dutchman Ten Hag did not hold back – with a particularly critical analysis of the first half.

He told MUTV: “We prepared them. (We knew) They’re a threat in transition and we saw the second goal. It can’t happen.

“You are not awake. We ran away, especially in midfield, that’s not possible. Unacceptable.

“It was the first goal too. A set piece, bad organization and bad discipline in the organization and you concede a goal.

“After that we came into play. We get a penalty, a clear one, and we earned another one in the second half.

“We started the game but couldn’t equalize before half-time.”

Ten Hag had to do without big stars like Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro, all of whom were still playing internationally at the World Cup.

And with some young and relatively inexperienced members in the line-up like Teden Mengi and Zidane Iqbal, Ten Hag might have had to reckon with a drop in performance.

Anthony Martial converted a first-half penalty to halve the deficit, but that didn’t stop Ten Hag from hooking his ENTIRE outfield unit at halftime.

He added: “They gave energy. They ran, they fought…maybe not always in the right organization and they made mistakes – they’re not used to playing at this level.

“But it was a good lesson. You see, if you make small mistakes, there are big consequences and you can lose the game. That’s what happened.

“That always has to be the standard. The first 15 minutes must not happen, that’s not our standard. That must not happen.

“We have to hit it, draw a line under it and move on. But that cannot happen in the future.

“We are unhappy with this game. Of course there is also something positive when you lose, but today you have more negative things.”

While the second half started perfectly thanks to an equalizer from Kobbie Mainoo, things soon fell apart as Cadiz restored their two-goal cushion.

It’s far from an ideal start for post-Cristiano Ronaldo Man Utd but when asked about the Portuguese legend, Ten Hag insisted the team was only looking to the future.

He said: “He’s gone and it’s in the past. We are looking ahead now and we are looking to the future.”

United will be back in action on December 10 when they meet Real Betis in their second Spanish friendly.
