Frustrated Jurgen Klopp vows to ‘reinvent’ Liverpool after Napoli nightmare and fears rivals will ‘laugh at’ them

Frustrated Jurgen Klopp has urged his Liverpool side to “reinvent themselves” after they were embarrassed by Napoli in their Champions League group stage opener.

The Reds suffered their biggest defeat of the competition by far, losing 4-1 to the Italian side and trailing by three goals at half-time.

Liverpool needed a four-goal deficit to show intent to get back into the game.

But Liverpool’s defensive disaster class has left Klopp fearful of rivals licking their lips and ‘laughing’ at his team.

Klopp has also challenged his team to reinvent themselves, and quickly, with the team being swamped with Premier League and Champions League games.

Klopp told BT Sport: “So now we have to… a little bit it looks like we have to reinvent ourselves.

“So there’s a lot of things missing – not in all games, but now.

“The funny part is we have to do this in the middle of a Premier League season and a Champions League season.

“In three days we play Wolves.

“If you watched the game tonight, you probably can’t stop laughing and thinking, ‘Oh my god, this is the perfect moment.’

“I would say it’s the perfect moment.

“But we have to try to find a setup that is much better at pretty much everything. We’ll try in three days.”

Klopp cut a frustrated figure in his post-match interview, insisting the result was “hard to take”.

But he has asked for more time to find the cause of the cowardly defeat at Naples – time not granted to compatriot Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea.

Ex-Chelsea coach Tuchel’s team, like Liverpool, got off to a bad start in the league and lost the start of the group stage of the Champions League on Tuesday – but against Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb.

Tuchel was sacked with leaders Graham Potter to take over rule at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, despite spending more than £250million on players this summer.

Klopp said of the defeat: “Yes, really hard to take. I would say it’s not that hard to explain once you’ve seen the game.

“First of all, with the two penalties… First of all, Napoli played a really good game and we didn’t – that’s the first explanation for the defeat.

“The two penalties we conceded. Certainly one, both were a bit unlucky. Only one goes in.

“And then we served the next two goals on a plate, pretty much, that’s not cool and we should defend it better first, but then of course at the last moment too.

“And yes, a 0-3 deficit has certain chances – never really in the game.

“We were neither defensive nor offensively compact.

“Until Thiago came on the pitch, I can’t remember any counter-pressing situation.

“The reason is that we’re just too far, we’re trying to clear things up ourselves with a few dribbles here or there. Can’t really play together. [we] are not connected.

“So it was obvious. Why did it happen? That’s the question I can’t answer right now – give me a little time to think about it.

“It’s a really tough cookie, but obviously I’ve got to take it.” Frustrated Jurgen Klopp vows to ‘reinvent’ Liverpool after Napoli nightmare and fears rivals will ‘laugh at’ them
