French Open semifinals suspended as protester ties herself to the net mid-Cilic-Ruud match

AN ENVIRONMENT protester briefly disrupted play at the French Open – by attaching herself to the NET.

The second semi-final in men’s singles between Marin Cilic and Casper Ruud was stopped after two hours of play and the Norwegians leading 4-1 in the third set.

A lone woman evaded security and ran onto the red clay court, where she quickly hooked a clip to the corner of the net that was linked to her own necklace.

The woman with the ponytail wore jeans and a white T-shirt that read, “We have 1,028 days left.”

Former world No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo, who has had a rough couple of days as rookie tournament director, watched from the sidelines as security personnel cut the strap and removed her from Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Both players had to leave the field for about 5-10 minutes.

The crowd began whistling and hooting as it happened, but security was very slow to respond to the interruption.

Four security guards carried her off the field horizontally and picked her up by her ankles and shoulders.

There was a similar safety breach during the 2022 Australian Open final, which Rafa Nadal won when he defeated Danill Medvedev in an epic five-setter.

In the ninth game of the second set, with Nadal leading 5-3 and aiming for an equaliser, a protester ran onto the pitch carrying a sign that read ‘ABOLISH REFUGEES DETENTION’.

However, he was quickly attacked and dragged away by quick-acting guards at Rod Laver Arena.

It was a bizarre moment in a long day in Paris that saw the first semi-final marred by Alex Zverev’s abrupt retirement when he suffered significant ankle damage.

The star twisted his ankle and cried out in pain.

He had to leave court in a wheelchair – but returned on crutches to say goodbye to the crowd and officially retire.

Actress Sienna Miller was among those in the crowd who applauded him.

The protest incident brought back memories of people tying themselves to goal posts in Premier League games.

Among them was a man who had tied himself to a goal post at Goodison Park during Everton’s game against Newcastle in March. French Open semifinals suspended as protester ties herself to the net mid-Cilic-Ruud match
