Freezing rain has arrived in our area and the leading edge of freezing rain will ease towards the southeast throughout the morning and particularly this afternoon.
Right away: A Winter Storm Warning is in effect until 10:00 a.m. Friday for a large portion of our area.
Alarm: Rain, freezing rain and snow will affect the area throughout the day. The current forecast will be more than a quarter of an inch of freezing rain. Total snow, for now, will be 1-3” with total snow expected to be higher up north.
Awareness: The weekend is cold again. Could drop below zero on Saturday morning.
This is an ice storm that we are dealing with.
Cold rain is coming when we thought it would happen yesterday.
Now it looks like the freezing rain will continue for longer than we initially thought. Now lasts until the early morning of Friday.
This means dangerous, icy conditions are possible for Friday morning’s peak. It will also reduce total snowfall to maybe 1-3 inches of snow for the Pittsburgh area.
We will see light but continuous showers throughout the day. Temperatures are clearly forecast to drop below 32 degrees so freezing rain is possible.
The sleet starts around 3 a.m. tomorrow for Pittsburgh, and the snow accumulation should be over before we reach the afternoon.
The skies will clear just in time for the sharp drop in temperatures on Saturday morning. I’m now lowering the morning temperature by 1° on Saturday and we could see even colder temperatures.
