As Ben Franklin famously said, nothing is certain except death and taxes.
Tax season is upon us and there could be ways to make it a little easier with a free tax return.
If your household income is $66,000 or less, you are eligible to United Way’s VITA Service (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance).
You must make an appointment and bring relevant forms such as W-2s, photo identification, and social security cards.
With documents in hand and identification at the ready, Margaret Goodwin was ready to finalize her taxes.
She started attending the United Way program many years ago after learning she didn’t have to pay for help applying.
Goodwin said, “I like the newspaper. I want the person in person to know that everything has been done correctly and I know that they will be filing and you want to back up your paperwork.”
Patrice Cunningham with United Way said the organization completed 7,000 tax returns last year alone.
Because of the pandemic and the child tax credits, they expect that number to grow to 9,000 this year, potentially saving hundreds of dollars for thousands of families.
“On a typical day to complete a tax return, it takes on average $250 to $300,” explains Cunningham. “For a family, when the average family we serve is about $24,000 to $25,000 overall. That’s a lot of money that can go back in their pocket, maybe pay medical bills, food in a few weeks. ”
Every volunteer here is certified by the IRS and everyone’s work is checked and matched.
It may take you about an hour at your appointment, but Goodwin says it’s worth it. “They are always so lovely and professional and I will always come back”
