Former Holy Spirit soccer star Donta Pollock Absent

The South Jersey football community is mourning the passing of one of the region’s top high school football players in recent Cape-Atlantic League history.

Former running Holy Spirit star Donta Pollock died Wednesday from injuries sustained in a pre-Christmas car crash on the Atlantic City Expressway.

Pollock, who has been paired with Nigel Jones, to form one of the most formidable barrages in recent South Jersey memory. The duo combined to run in 2,954 yards and 32 points like the seniors in 2011, with Pollock rushing to 1,623 with 20 touchdowns in just nine games.

As a junior, Pollock was a standout, running for the Cape-Atlantic League best league 1,868 yards and 29 touchdowns to lead Holy Spirit to a 12-0 record and NJSIAA Non-State title Public III.

He was voted the Atlantic City Player of the Year by the press during the 2010 season.

As a sophomore, he dashed for 906 and 12 points and even hit 506 yards and seven points as a freshman.

Overall Pollock dashed 4,903 yards and 68 touchdowns during his four seasons with Absecon School.

He had some memorable games when he dived into the Sparta team. In his second season, Pollock made 38 hits from 229 yards and three touchdowns on Thanksgiving Day against rival Atlantic City, the town he lives in.

As a junior, he crossed the 200-yard mark in head-to-head matches, including a 32-carry, 235-yard match and three touchdowns in a win over Absegami. Last week he had 32 runs for 201 yards and two touchdowns against Oakcrest.

Pollock is only 28 years old.
