But Spain midfielder Fabregas has made just 67 appearances for them since then – up from just FIVE last season.

Monaco have now decided not to offer the 35-year-old a new contract.

They paid tribute to the world champion extensively on their website.

However, they admitted: “Unfortunately, the former Barcelona academy product was held back by injuries last season.

“Nevertheless, he retained an important role at the heart of our team, never stopping to encourage his teammates and remained valuable with advice and action.

“He has an exceptional CV having played 833 games at the highest level – the earliest under Arsene Wenger and alongside Thierry Henry at Arsenal.

“Monaco would like to thank Cesc Fabregas for his three and a half years at the club and wish him all the best for the future.”

Fabregas scored 57 goals in 303 Arsenal games and won the FA Cup with the Gunners in 2005.

He joined Chelsea in 2014 after three years at Barcelona and helped the Blues win two Premier League titles, the Europa League and the FA Cup.

The midfielder, who has 110 caps, helped Spain win the 2010 World Cup, as well as the Euro 2008 and 2012 titles.

Fabregas announced in May that he would not be seeking a contract extension with Monaco and described his injury-plagued season as “the worst year of my life”.

The Spaniard, who is now a free agent, needs to find a new club if he wants to extend his footballing career.
