Football studio in hysteria on Saturday after Tim Sherwood made a mistake as the former gaffer can’t figure out why a penalty isn’t awarded

THE Soccer Saturday Studio was let down by a hilarious blunder made by Tim Sherwood while watching Preston take on QPR.

The action had only just begun when Andre Dozzell caught Ben Woodburn late in the box.

Sherwood believed it had to be a penalty and was extremely baffled as to why it wasn’t awarded.

After much confusion as the other pundits watched the tackle, fellow commentator Clinton Morrison realized it was not a free kick as the foul was committed by the attacking team, not the defending side.

The ex-Tottenham boss may not have known which way the side were firing, thinking the challenge had come in the opposite box.

Dozzell was cautioned and a free kick for Preston was correctly awarded. Of course, there was no penalty for Ryan Lowe’s team at the other end.

When the penny dropped in the studio, Morrison, Paul Merson and Micheal Dawson were in hysterics.

The situation began with Sherwood taking action first, claiming it was “a nailed-down penalty”.

Then he saw the referee show the yellow card and say: “Yellow card, penalty.”

But the eagle-eyed Morrison realized what was going on when he replied: “I don’t think it’s a penalty, I think he’s defending. It’s reverse, look, it’s a free kick. It’s the other way around.

Merson almost fell off his chair laughing and said, “That would have been a counterattack.”

Host Simon Thomas remained confused before being updated by Morrison and Merson.

The ex-Ireland striker exclaimed: “No it’s a free kick defending Preston type.”

Merson echoed, “They kick the other way.”

Fans would have seen the funny side of the error, wrote one more Twitter: “This is absolutely unbearable.”

Another said: “This is embarrassing.”

While another added: “Tim Sherwood with a new Chris Kamara on Sky!”

QPR ended up winning the game 1-0
