Food stamps can now be used at restaurants in eight states with your EBT card

The Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as Food Stamps, currently helps more than 41.5 million Americans put food on the table for their families.

SNAP provides benefit for eligible low-income individuals and families.

Benefits are paid on a specific date each month, depending on your state.

Funds provided through an electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card are used like a debit card to purchase food at authorized retail grocery stores.

You must register SNAP in status where you live.

Each state has a different application form and process.

The federal government has expanded the program to allow states to participate in the SNAP restaurant meal program (RMP).

What is the SNAP restaurant meal program?

The SNAP Restaurant Meal Program is a special state-run program that allows elderly, homeless, and disabled SNAP recipients to purchase food at SNAP-authorized restaurants .

They can do so using SNAP EBT Card.

Under the restaurant meal program, participating restaurants must offer meals at a discounted price.

This is a relief for SNAP recipients because the money they receive cannot be used to buy ready-to-eat hot foods, such as soups and rotisserie chicken, at grocery.

Which states have the SNAP restaurant meal program?

Eight states have opted into a federal program that allows older adults to use their food benefits in select, low-cost restaurant meals.

The program is offered widely in Arizona and California.

Other states such as Hawaii, Michigan, Maryland, and Rhode Island offer restaurant meal programs in select cities or counties.

Illinois and New York have passed legislation allowing their respective state social service agencies to apply for the federal program.

How do states get involved?

Participate SNAP restaurant meal program, states must demonstrate to the United States Department of Agriculture that certain high-needs residents are not well served by traditional food interests.

The program then allows members of three target populations: adults over 60, people with disabilities, and the homeless, plus their spouses, to eat at low-cost restaurants, to be State certified.

Chains, such as Subway and McDonald’s, participate in the program in select states.
