But when the police arrived at their Perris, California home – about 70 miles from Los Angeles – they were appalled by how badly the Turks treated their children.

Here are the most shocking revelations about what the childhoods of poor children in Turpin were like after an exclusive November 20 interview aired on November 19.

‘BIBLE EXPLAINED’

Two of the sisters of the Turpin family allegedly twisted their parents “used the Bible” to justify their abuse and claim they had the right to kill them.

13 siblings were saved in January 2018 from their home after Jordan Turpin escaped and called 911.

Jennifer and Jordan testified that parents David and Louise used household items such as belts and sticks as punishment tools.

They allege that their parents used the Bible to justify abuse.

Jennifer, 33, said: “Literally, they used the Bible to explain their behavior to us.

“They like to point out things in Deuteronomy, saying, ‘We have a right to do this to you.’ That they even have the power to kill us if we disobey.”

The siblings also allege that their parents would chain them to their beds and pull their hair if they misbehave.

Jordan Turpin made a 911 call in January 2018 but admitted it was nearly impossible for her to make.

The 21-year-old brother and sister said: “My whole body was shaking. I really couldn’t call 911. I think we were close to death so many times. If something happened to me, at least I’d say we’re close to death. especially I died trying. “

During the 911 call, which was played in a preview clip of the interview, Jordan was heard saying, “I just ran away from home because I live in a family of 15 and we have abusive parents.”

Jennifer said the “only word” she could use to describe their situation was “hell.”

“I know him [was] say I am the devil,” she said. “I just looked at him like, ‘what did I do?'”

FOR SURVEY ON KETCHUP

When Jennifer was 18, the cruel couple had 10 kids moved into a trailer in a remote part of their property, taking only their two youngest children with them before driving away.

They bring in their meager groceries once a week, or sometimes every two weeks, leaving the kids starving.

“I’m going to try to stretch it out and make sure we at least have something to eat every day of the week,” says Jennifer.

Jordan, just six years old, added: “There are a lot of people starving to death. I will have to find a way to eat. I’ll eat ketchup or mustard or ice. “

Using an old-fashioned flip phone, Louise and David gave Jennifer “instructions,” which included keeping the rebellious siblings in a cage, that is, a dog kennel.

“You’re torn, you don’t know what to do,” she said. “I am on the verge of suicide. I want to end it all. All my pain, everything. ”

When the family moved to California, in 2010, neighbors found litter and feces all over the home and ropes tied to the children’s beds as if used for restraint.

At her new home, Louise took on huge credit card debt and hoarded baby clothes, games, and toys she would never give the kids.

While their parents binge-eat fast food and mock them with freshly baked pumpkin pies they’re not allowed to touch, Jennifer says the kids eat it once a day – get a pea butter sandwich peanuts, a frozen burrito or chips.

GOOGLE FOR HELP

Vanessa Espinoza, a former deputy public guardian for the seven adult Turpins cases, is responsible for helping the older kids with housing, healthcare, education, and food assistance.

However, Joshua Turpin said she was “not helpful” at all, ask him to “just Google it” when he asks for help.

State records show Espinoza as a real estate broker. Now, a petition is calling for her California license to be revoked.

She did not participate in the 20/20 documentary or comment on the claims.

“They did become a victim again by the system,” Mike Hestrin, Riverside County District Attorney, told Diane Sawyer on a special 20/20 family day last week.

Hestrin prosecuted the Turpins’ parents, David and Louise, who are currently serving life sentences in various prisons in California.

He and his team still keep in touch with the kids.

“They are living in poverty,” he said as he talked about adult children.

“They are living in neighborhoods full of crime. There’s money for their education — they can’t access it. ”

Hestrin said it was “unthinkable” for the Turpins to be denied “basic needs.”

SECRET CAMERA IN BARBIES

Jennifer said in the ABC interview about how before her siblings were released, she was afraid that if she did something wrong, her parents would beat her up.

“If I do one little thing wrong, I get hit,” she said. “And not just hit, hit until I bleed.

Jordan said that She got the idea to run away after uploading some videos online.

“…When mom and dad left, that’s when I snuck into the bathroom and filmed my videos and took them out,” she said. Jordan often records his voice in the bathroom.

She told Sawyer that a viewer once texted her and asked a few questions. Their conversation made her realize she should seek help.

Jordan recounts the terrifying decision to call 911 to her parents after she managed to escape.

She explained: “My whole body was shaking and while I was still on the phone, I remembered that I couldn’t really dial 911 because… I tried to dial 911 but I couldn’t even dial 911. I pressed my thumb on the buttons because I was shaking.

“But I’m trying to stay calm so I can do it. And then I finally hit it and they answer. I’ve never actually been on the phone with anyone.”

Jordan’s 911 call, which aired in the episode, describes some of the horrors the Turpin children experienced.

“They beat us… they threw us across the room, they pulled our hair, they pulled our hair,” she said. “My two younger sisters are chained now.”

SERIOUS PROFITS IN HELL

You told the police that Some children were tied with chains and padlocks. Police found the children shackled to their beds in “dark and foul-smelling surroundings”.

A statement from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office said: “Deputies located what they believe to be 12 children inside the home, but were shocked to discover that seven of them really an adult.

“The victims appeared to be malnourished and very dirty.”

Neighbors told local media they were not aware there were children in the house, while others said they had only seen them at night.

Officers discovered two of the children chained to the bed, as Jordan described, and found a chain dangling from what appeared to be a bunk bed.

Investigators later found that the children were regularly beaten by their twisted parents until they bled, strangled and allowed them to eat only once per day, and bathed only once a year. .

The cruel couple, who would cite the Bible to justify frequent beatings, left some children tied up for months.

The kids live off bologna bread and peanut butter while their parents gobble up the takeaways in front of them.

The children were not allowed to exercise, could only speak when allowed to talk, and were also forbidden to communicate with each other.

The oldest child, a 29-year-old woman, weighed just 82 pounds – the typical weight of a 7-year-old.

David and Louise tortured the children by giving away apple pies and pumpkin pie that they were forbidden to eat.

They also buy children’s toys but refuse to let them open them.

David, then 57, and Louise, 50, were arrested and later sentenced to life in prison for the heinous abuse and imprisonment of their children.

They pleaded guilty to 14 counts including cruelty to an adult dependent, child cruelty, torture and false imprisonment.

The Turpins all spent several weeks in the hospital before the six siblings were split into two different foster homes.
