Southgate has a contract until after Euro 2024 but there is no guarantee he will lead the team in Germany.
Both the FA and the players are behind him and want him to stay, but England will have to wait anxiously before returning to action in March.
SunSport takes a look at the five managers who could replace Southgate.

Thomas Tuchel
As revealed by SunSport, Tuchel would be interested in the role should it become available.
The German has already proven himself at the highest level, winning trophies with PSG and Chelsea, including the 2021 Champions League.
Moreover, Tuchel is available after being sacked by Chelsea in September, which would make the hiring process much smoother.

Frank Lampard
Lampard is by far the least experienced on the list and probably the least likely to get the honor.
He has done well at Derby but is struggling at Chelsea and Everton and needs to improve his reputation before he is seriously considered for a job of this magnitude.

Eddie Howe
With the help of the takeover, Howe has completely transformed Newcastle in the last 12 months.
He turned the club from a relegation candidate to a Champions League hopeful.
Bearing this in mind, England will find it difficult to get him out of St James’ Park.

Steve Cooper
Cooper knows everything about how to be successful on the international stage.
That’s because he led England to the U17 World Cup title in 2017 and helped develop both Jadon Sancho and Phil Foden.
He has recently cemented his future at Nottingham Forest by signing a new contract but he would certainly jump at the chance to lead his country.

Maurice Pochettino
Since he is also unemployed, the Argentine is one of the favorites for the job.

He has shown heroics at both Southampton and Tottenham and has a proven ability to work with and improve on younger players.
His last managerial role at PSG was extremely forgetful despite winning the title last season, but England could do a lot worse than he did.
