According to the Arkansas State Police Department, the accident occurred when a school bus traveling westbound on Highway 35 attempted to merge into the southern lanes of Highway 65.
It was at that moment that the bus failed to yield to an oncoming 18-wheeler and crashed about a mile south of Dermott, police said.
The deceased victims were identified as Brayshawn Ranson (19), Tommy Figures (50), Terry King (56), Regina Jackson (65) and Geraldine Prewitt (73).
Dermott City Council member Chris Akins told KARK 4 News that everyone remembered Prewitt as “Lil Bit” and said the whole community loved her.

The school bus was attended by adults from CB King Memorial School, an organization that provides developmental disabilities services to infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and adults with disabilities.
CB King Director of Programs Lora Medina released a statement saying: “Our CB King family is suffering tonight.
“We don’t have the words to express our pain right now. The Arkansas City adult center will be closed for the time being while we process what happened.”
The five other victims were taken to local hospitals for treatment. Her condition was not immediately known.
