NAPLES

Fishing from Naples Pier remains banned on Sundays and from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., in the hope it will protect pelicans from injury from fishermen’s hooks, but some people don’t. satisfied with this limitation.

The leaders of the Von Arx Wildlife Hospital in Naples said they had not received any pelicans for the past three Sundays; At one point, they received one to three pelicans a day with wounds from fishermen at Naples Pier. Despite the positive impact the new program has had on pelicans, the restrictions are also affecting anglers who think the pier should close another day.

The Sunday fishing ban is intended to last until May. Luciano Blanco is an angler living in Naples and has created a petition to fight those restrictions.

“Dandals can be injured in many ways,” says Blanco. “Obviously, you know, the lines go into them, but there are anglers who are there from Monday to Saturday and I’ve seen them hook on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, thursday. Friday and Saturday .. I have caught many birds since closing this Sunday . I took two birds to the hospital for treatment. Closing on Sunday is not the solution to this problem, there are other solutions.”

For some people, Sunday is the only day they can go out. Blanco says he cares about the pelicans as much as the next, but believes there must be a better solution.

“Why can’t we do this study another day, or generally not?” Blanco said. “Help more of the birds out there… there are different solutions to getting around, not just closing the docks. The pier has been open since 1888. It’s not time to start closing yet.”

Naples city leaders chose Sunday because it is a busy fishing day. Blanco says they should consider having more people on the pier to help and educate anglers. He plans to write a letter to Naples officials to tell them that these restrictions are not the solution to the problem and to see if they are open to other ideas.
