PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Crews have taken the first steps towards tearing down the Fern Hollow Bridge that collapsed on Saturday.
Swank Construction will dismantle the bridge but first, they have to get to it.
To do that, they made a path down the embankment inclined 45 degrees next to the bridge.

However, the total demolition is not the first order of the business.
“They are demolishing to assist with the NTSB investigation at this time,” explained PennDOT District 11 Executive Director Cheryl Moon-Sirianni. “The NTSB needs to see some things that may have been covered with concrete or may need to move some things for their investigation to continue. So the contractor is helping them move some large pieces that they may need to lift and move elsewhere.”
Once the NTSB has completed its work, the contractor can begin demolition of the entire bridge.
