First look at new Apple Watch models and I’m obsessed with ‘magic’ game-changing upgrade

Apple has launched a pair of new smartwatches just in time for Christmas – and The US Sun has taken a look at them.

I had the opportunity to try out the new Apple Watch Models at the iPhone maker’s headquarters in Cupertino, California.

The Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 were launched at a special event just a few hours ago – check out our Apple live blog.

Both offer fairly minor upgrades that you probably wouldn’t care about if you bought last year’s models.

But there is one standout feature (Double Tap!) that I’m obsessed with and had the pleasure of trying out, and the fact remains that the Apple Watch is increasingly becoming a must-have accessory for iPhone owners.

Here are the big changes for Apple’s new smartwatches.

The first look at the iPhone 15 and the big design change are the perfect reason to upgrade

Apple Watch Series 9

The Apple Watch Series 9 has the same familiar design and looks great on the wrist.

This time it has a 2x brighter display.

And Siri now works with your Health app, so you can ask questions or share useful information.

For example, you can tell Siri when you last took your medication.

Or you can ask how long you slept or what your average heart rate is while walking.

Another clever feature makes it easy to find your lost iPhone.

It works the same way modern iPhones use Find My to track down AirPods, giving you directions to the item, hot-and-cold style.

With Apple Watch, you will now see an arrow pointing to iPhone that you can follow.

And as you get closer, the distance counts down in feet.

This way you may never lose it again.

My favorite feature, however, is Double Tap.

This allows you to control the Apple Watch Series 9 without even touching it.

Apple has built a clever sensor system into the Series 9 that detects when you tap your index finger and thumb together.

So you can double tap this gesture to “click” on your Apple Watch.

For example, you can answer and hang up calls – or start and stop timers.

It’s like magic. I’m obsessed.

Apple Watch Ultra 2

Last year Apple announced the Apple Watch Ultra.

It was a powerful and robust watch aimed at explorers, fitness enthusiasts and serious gadget geeks.

Now Apple has updated it with some practical improvements.

There is a faster S9 chip on board and a promised battery life of 36 hours – even 72 hours in battery saver mode characteristics activated.

It features the brightest display yet, with a promised 3,000 nits for excellent viewing in even the sunniest conditions.

The titanium casing should ensure you don’t scratch it on your adventures.

And you can enjoy the same nifty double-tap feature available on the Series 9.

This is convenient because it allows you to keep both hands occupied for the most part while still using your Apple Watch Ultra 2.

I tried it and it was extremely easy to get the hang of.

Once you master the technique after a few tries, it seems to work perfectly.

It’s a simple but incredibly effective change.

Final thoughts

We can only give a complete verdict on both watches once we have test models.

But so far I’m impressed.

Both Apple Watch series are about as good as smartwatches get, and Apple has improved them even further this time.

The updates may be incremental, but Apple is slowly but surely establishing its smartwatches as essential accessories.

Fans of the Ultra 2 will pay $799/£799 for the base model.

Of course, the Series 9 is cheaper at just $399/£399.
