ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – The Mehlville Fire Service faced multiple challenges Wednesday, as they battled fires at Mac’s Tire and Auto Shop on Tesson Ferry Road. The business was destroyed, but no one was injured.
The initial source of the fire was believed to be a car catching fire inside the store, according to the Mehlville Fire Department.
“The smoke was pretty thick,” said Mehlville Assistant Fire Chief Dan LaFata. Piles of tires fueled the fire that disrupted traffic on the Tesson Ferry for more than two hours.
Nick Cosic was working in the area and witnessed firefighters battling the blaze.
“They keep pouring so much water in there and it just can’t seem to get out,” he said. Cosic credited the firefighters for keeping the blaze from spreading and causing even more damage.
There is a firehouse opposite the tire shop. LaFata said the crew was out on another call when the department received a call about a vehicle fire. When first responders arrived, the building was engulfed in flames.
Other hazards include burnt power lines and extreme cold. “This one went to the second alarm and that brought in units from Fenton and the Saline Valley,” LaFata said. We are just using more personnel and personnel to strengthen our positions.”
Firefighters have found nothing suspicious about the fire and are classifying it as random. Nick Patterson, owner of Nic’s CBD and Vape, expressed appreciation for the firefighters’ work and was relieved to hear no one was injured. “This could certainly have hurt a lot of people,” he said.
