An Iranian has been charged in the US over a plot to assassinate a former national security adviser.
Shahram Poursafi, who lives in Iran and is in the Revolutionary Guard, is wanted for allegedly offering $300,000 to eliminate John Bolton.
According to FBI files, Poursafi told a person who was actually an FBI informant that he wanted Bolton purged or eliminated.
He gave the person Bolton’s office address, the affidavit said.
It was in alleged retaliation for a US airstrike that killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani at Baghdad airport in 2020, the Justice Ministry said.
Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen said: “It wasn’t an empty threat.”
Bolton thanked the FBI for their work on the case and the Secret Service for their protection.
He said: “While not much can be said publicly at this time, one point is undeniable.
“The rulers of Iran are liars, terrorists and enemies of the United States.”
