He faced further tragedy when wife Toni died in 2016 and the family secretly buried her ashes next to Stephen.

Earlier this month, Mr Cameron died after being admitted to hospital from his retirement home in Ashford, Kent. The mirror reports.

An investigation will take place in the summer.

A source told the newspaper Mr Cameron’s devastation at Stephen’s death deepened after his wife died.

“The ramifications of what Noye did haunted him,” they said.

Stephen was killed in front of his fiancée Danielle Cable, 17.

Noye had previously stabbed undercover detective John Fordham to death in 1985 while investigating the Brink’s-Mat bar robbery.

He was acquitted of the officer’s murder after claiming self-defense, but was sentenced to 14 years in prison for handling stolen gold and was released in 1994.

The villain was still under license when he stabbed electrician Stephen to death on May 19, 1996 after an argument.

Stephen and Danielle had just left his family home in Swanley to head to London’s Brick Lane to shop for bagels.

New driver Danielle was behind the wheel of Stephen’s red Rascal van when it almost collided with Noye’s Land Rover Discovery on a slip road leading to a roundabout where the M20 meets the M25.

Enraged Noye got out of his vehicle at the stop light and punched the 6ft 4in Stephen in the eye.

When the younger man started defeating Noye in a fight, the villainous mobster went back to his car to grab a knife and stabbed Stephen twice, piercing his heart and liver while Danielle watched in horror.

A witness claimed the ailing killer grinned as he walked away from the scare.

Noye then went on the run and became Britain’s most wanted man before being arrested two years later when brave Danielle helped him identify him at a Spanish restaurant.

The former police officer who led the hunt for Noye said Danielle will go into hiding for the rest of her life.

In 2000, Noye was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum sentence of 16 years before being released in June 2019.

A year later he was seen at the intersection where he had stabbed Stephen.

Mr Cameron told The Sun at the time: “It’s like Noye walking on Stephen’s grave.

“I feel disgusted that he returned to the place where he took my son’s life.”

He said he felt Noye was “laughing in the face of authority,” adding, “He’s pouring salt on my wounds.”
