ARGENTINA star Angel Di Maria became the first player to comfort Croatian talisman Luka Modric after the World Cup semifinals.
Modric was key to propel his side into the final stages but Aregtnina proved a step too far as the South Americans won comfortably.
A Lionel Messi penalty and Julian Alvarez brace gave Argentina a 3-0 win and Modric looked heartbroken after the game.
Di Maria, a former team-mate of Modric at Real Madrid, quickly switched to midfield.
He hugged and kissed 37-year-old Modric and appeared to say a few words of reassurance after what might be his last World Cup appearance.
Modric had done exactly the same thing the previous round after Croatia beat Brazil on penalties.
The Croatia captain comforted Real Madrid pal Rodrygo after he missed a penalty in the shootout.
Fans on social media also showed support for Modric with one saying: “Nothing will change the fact that Modric is a legend.
Another added: “You’ll be a goat forever Modric.”
And a third said: “Needs no consolation, a semi-final with Croatia, beating favorites Brazil, couldn’t be prouder of that 🐐.”
