Fans joke France have lost the World Cup due to the size of Man Utd star Raphael Varane’s butt

FRANCE missed a chance to become the second team in history to become back-to-back world champions after losing to Argentina on penalties.

And fans have joked that Raphael Varane’s bottom is the reason for the loss.

After Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria gave Argentina the lead, Kylian Mbappe hit back with two goals to send the game into overtime.

Messi then scored again to make it 3-2 but only after a narrow decision for offside with Manchester United ace Varane.

In the first half of extra time, Enzo Fernandez passed the ball to Lautaro Martinez, who saw his attempt saved by Hugo Lloris, only for Messi to push the rebound over the line.

Early replays showed it was a tough question whether Martinez had been played on the side by Varane.

VAR confirmed the Argentina striker was indeed on the side and fans joked that it was Varane’s rear end that meant the goal counted.

One Twitter user wrote: “I love how Varane’s backside was used as the offside line for this graphic.”

Another said: “Varane’s butt took Argentina a World Cup.”

While a third added: “Varane’s butt really did cost a nation.”

However, others suggested that Varane’s torso also kept Martinez on the side.

In theory, had the goal not come, Mbappe’s second penalty that sealed his hat-trick would have meant a 3-2 victory for France after extra time.

Although there could have been more twists and turns in an incredible game had Messi’s extra-time strike been ruled out.

In the end it went to penalties, with Emi Martinez being the hero from the penalty spot for Argentina.

He denied Kingsley Coman before Aurelien Tchouameni shot wide to see Argentina win their first World Cup since 1986.

The now three-time champion celebrated the victory with wild cheers in the dressing room.
