The former Liverpool striker was joined as a guest on the set by Steve McManaman, his former England and Anfield team-mate.

But as they both played for Madrid, analyzing the upcoming match, the remarkable bombshell of words fell.

And it sent Twitter into turmoil when McManaman called Owen by the nickname ‘Mo’ during news coverage before their colleagues continued it.

One viewer tweeted: “Mcmanaman calling Michael Owen ‘Mo’ is possibly the worst thing I think I’ve ever heard.”

Another wrote: “Please stop calling Michael Owen ‘Mo’.”

A fellow fan commented: “Sorry… Michael Owen has been known as ‘Mo’ ever since. I’m this late. He probably gave himself a nickname.”

As another angry viewer said: “Did the presenter on @btsportfootball just call Michael Owen “MO”…the guy who started this, needs to stop immediately!”

This is not the first time the 42-year-old Ballon d’Or winner has caused a storm.

He has previously been branded ‘the most boring savant in sport’ after his previous appearance on the box.
