Early goals from Edin Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan stunned AC Milan to give Inter a 2-0 lead before the second leg next week.

BT Sport has been highly acclaimed for its coverage of Italy’s top flight this season, starring James Richardson and James Horncastle.

But the broadcaster decided against using its Italian football experts tonight, going with its usual Premier League crew as experts tonight.

And the inclusion of Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard, as well as the choice of Steve McManaman, who cried out “Damn hell” after an explosion in the crowd, frustrated viewers.

Journalist Colin Millar started the debate by tweeting: “BT Sport will cover every Serie A game with expert commentators, pundits and presenters.

“To ignore all of that to end up with this standard of coverage for one of the biggest games of the season is desperately selling viewers.

“Their coverage of the Champions League in general is atrocious. Absolutely miles from the standard it should be and by far the biggest underperformer in football TV coverage in the UK.”

And it seemed many echoed his sentiments with another tweet: “BT Sport have fantastic Serie A commentators plus James Horncastle and James Richardson who specialize in Italian football.

“So why pay for 7 clueless numpies to have a jolly? Inter v AC Milan Champions League semifinals.”

Another wrote: “More shabby UEFA Champions League coverage from BT Sport tonight. A missed opportunity… James Richardson & Co. are 𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆.”

A fellow viewer said: “The coverage of the Champions League on BT Sport is absolutely shocking.”

Another said: “BT Sport is so weird, their coverage of Serie A and the National League is great but the Premier League and Champions League are bloody awful!”

“Somebody needs to take BT Sport’s Champions League coverage away, they’re making fun of this competition,” ranted another.

While another fan said: “Absolutely nothing unites football fans quite like their dislike of BT Sport Champions League coverage.”
