FANS have launched a wild theory that the World Cup was ‘rigged’ after Argentina were awarded their FOURTH penalty of the tournament.
Lionel Messi took on Croatia on penalties and put his side on course to a 3-0 win.
The 35-year-old produced a brilliant performance, catching Josko Gvardiol by surprise before setting up his side’s third.
But some fans online have complained of foul play, citing the number of penalties Argentina were awarded during the tournament.
The Albiceleste had four penalties in Qatar, three of which were scored by Messi.
against Saudi Arabia.
He opened the scoring in the shock defeat by Saudi Arabia, missed one against Poland but converted from 12 yards against the Netherlands on Friday and again in the semifinals on Tuesday.
The most controversial penalty was against Poland.
But Tuesday’s decision also sparked debate, with ITV pundits Roy Keane, Gary Neville and Ian Wright not happy with it – although former referee Peter Walton agreed with the decision.
The penalty was awarded after Julian Alvarez was rattled by Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic.
Some fans took to Twitter to vent their anger, claiming that the tournament was being held in Argentina’s favour.
