And it meant England were eliminated on Olivier Giroud’s powerful second-half header.
But fans were quick to point out a strange superstition regarding the event’s broadcaster – ITV.
The channel’s track record at England games in the past has been far from outstanding and despite their triumph against Senegal, fans were confident the curse would rear its ugly head again tonight.
One fan said: “ITV curse again.”
A second user said: “Can ITV do the country a favor and stop showing England games they are clearly a bane.”
A third said: “Please don’t ever let ITV show an England game again please.”
Another said: “The ITV curse strikes again. At that point they’ll just have to rip it off and let the BBC cover it all.”
“Now can we agree that the BBC have full rights to all future tournaments please… The ITV curse continues…” pleaded another.

Another explained: “#ITVCurse is ruining Christmas.”
George Lineker, the son of BBC presenter and former England ace Gary, said: “Kane would have a score if it were on BBC.”
The curse itself dates back to 1998, when England played 30 games on the channel during that period.
Of those 30 games, the Three Lions have won just SEVEN times.
They have lost 10 and drawn 13, including the quarterfinals.
