“Secret Life of the American Teenager” premiered at the height of the ABC Family TV series, before the channel transitioned to Freeform (every Vox). “Secret Life” was a top show at the time. The film depicts Shailene Woodley as Amy, a high school student who accidentally becomes pregnant. “Secret Life” was created by Brenda Hampton, author of “7th Heaven”. Both series reflect Christian values (via washington articles). This is what contributes to Woodley’s problems with the project because it conflicts with her personal beliefs.
Woodley revealed in an interview with Bustle. She went on to say, “There are motivated belief systems that are different from mine.” Woodley is positive for sex, which is in stark contrast to the wary message that “Secret Life” tells. Many storylines involve abstinence and even shaming others who have premarital sex.
“Legally, however, I was stuck there. To this day, it’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. So being on ‘Secret Life’ helped me up. more vocal about his own belief system,” continued Woodley. Despite the difficult circumstances, Woodley has had a career portraying many strong, forward-thinking characters.
