However, early in the morning of December 17, P-22 was “compassionately put to sleep” at the age of 12.
This was allegedly due to serious injuries he sustained earlier in the week and his overall poor condition, according to the California Dept. of Fish & Wildlife.
The National Park Service noted that they captured P-22s earlier this week as the mountain lion had begun to move further out of its domain.
P-22s even began to venture into densely populated areas.

He’s even said to have killed a Chihuahua and tried to grab another dog, forcing experts to capture and examine him.
The famous mountain lion was eventually caught in the Los Feliz backyard near several schools, one of which was John Marshall High School.
Officials claimed that P-22 “showed signs of distress” and was allegedly even once hit by a car, damaging one of the big cat’s eyes.
He was further examined, and experts determined that P-22 was also severely underweight and suffering from a skin condition.
Ultimately, they decided that P-22s were not suitable for returning to Griffith Park and initially had plans for a wildlife sanctuary retirement.
